KidsFit Fall Session 2013 http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/kidsfit-fall-session-2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=kidsfit-fall-session-2013 http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/kidsfit-fall-session-2013/#comments Tue, 24 Sep 2013 21:06:17 +0000 365Danbury http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/?p=8648 kidsfitKidsFit is a “mother’s morning out” program that I, and many of my friends have used for our children over the years. It is a fantastic way for your child to make friends and develop new skills all while you get a little time for yourself!

This pre-school readiness program is designed for children (without parent/caregiver) to experience the joy of learning, cooperative play, and social interaction with other children in hopes to prepare them for their first preschool experience. A typical class includes circle time, songs and parachute play, weather, group gym games, an arts & craft project, and a story. Appropriate transitions between activities allow children to recognize and become familiar with the structure of the day and to look forward to the next activity. Children must turn two by the start of the program and do not need to be potty trained. Please pack a snack and a drink for your child for each class.

Do you have a child at home ages 2-5?  If so, check out KidsFit!  October marks the start of the  fall sessions of Kidsfit in Brookfield and Newtown.

Connecticut’s Annual Sales Tax Free Week 2013 http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/connecticuts-annual-sales-tax-free-week-2013/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=connecticuts-annual-sales-tax-free-week-2013 http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/connecticuts-annual-sales-tax-free-week-2013/#comments Sun, 18 Aug 2013 16:09:46 +0000 365Danbury http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/?p=8634 Have you started your back to school shopping yet? Or maybe you need something new for yourself? Connecticut’s annual holiday from the sales tax begins on Sunday, August 18th and runs through Saturday, August 24th.

During this third week of August, individual items of clothing and footwear that cost less than $300 are completely exempt from state sales tax – other than sports equipment, specialty clothing, jewelry and accessories. Store sales, catalog and on-line purchases, purchases on layaway and rentals are exempt. In addition, the tax free holiday week includes items valued at more but discounted to under $300 with sales, coupons and similar merchant promotions.

Check those sales ads and get your coupons ready! You could score a real bargain this week! And as always, don’t forget to shop local when possible. For every $100 spent in a locally-owned business, $68 returns to the community. Spend the same amount at a national retailer and only $43 comes back. Spend it online and the local community receives $0 (Source:  Civic Economics 2008 Study).

Ben’s Bells Newtown at Brookfield Library http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/bens-bells-newtown-at-brookfield-library/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bens-bells-newtown-at-brookfield-library http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/bens-bells-newtown-at-brookfield-library/#comments Thu, 04 Apr 2013 20:45:12 +0000 365Danbury http://neighborhoodsquirrel.com/?p=8331

Ben's Bells Ben’s Bells Newtown is coming to The Brookfield Library on April 29 from noon to 2:00 p.m.  Join them to make bells and help spread kindness!

What are Ben’s Bells?  Their mission is “to inspire, educate and motivate each other to realize the impact of intentional kindness and to empower individuals to act according to that awareness, thereby strengthening ourselves, our relationships and our communities.”  You can find more information, including a history of the project, at bensbells.org.

Nationally renowned, Ben’s Bells are brightly colored ceramic works of art that are randomly hung in public places that bear a tag instructing the person who finds the bell to take it home and to remember to be kind.  It takes 10 different hands to make a single Ben’s Bells so, this truly is a community project!  Participants attending this workshop will have the opportunity to enjoy two steps of the bell making process.  First, you will form beads with clay and then you will have the opportunity to paint beads.  The bells you make will eventually be distributed throughout the area to fulfill their purpose of spreading kindness, one interaction at a time.

This program is appropriate for all ages but younger participants do require assistance from an adult.  You don’t need to be a Brookfield resident to participate.  Ben’s Bells Newtown relies solely on donations so, don’t forget to bring a bring few bucks for our donation jar!  Reservations for this session are REQUIRED as space is limited.  Please register online at http://bensbellsnewtown_brookfieldlibrary.eventbrite.com.
