Thu, 03 Oct 2013 22:40:33 +0000 en-US hourly 1 S.H.O.P. Announces 3rd Annual Passport to Sandy Hook Thu, 03 Oct 2013 22:39:58 +0000 365Danbury S.H.O.P.Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (S.H.O.P.), a group of local business owners and community members from Sandy Hook, is pleased to announce the third annual Passport to Sandy Hook.  The event will take place on Saturday, October 12 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the downtown Sandy Hook Village area.

“Sandy Hook is a special place,” said Mike Burton, S.H.O.P. President.  “It is a great opportunity for people to come, enjoy the day, and celebrate all that Sandy Hook has to offer.  We have over 30 businesses participating this year – some new, and many returning.  This event grows every year and is always an exciting day.”

The event, sponsored by i95, Newtown Savings Bank, and Andy Sachs’ Deals Around Town, will feature live music from two bands, giveaways or discounts at local shops, samples from dining establishments, face painting, a Bounce House, special visits from the Newtown-Strong Therapy dogs and Bocker the Labradoodle, and the Newtown Juggling and Circus Arts, among other activities.

“Sandy Hook is a wonderful place to own a business,” said Sharon Doherty, owner of PJs Laundromat.  “I am looking forward to welcoming frequent visitors and new faces.  It’s a fun day for people of all ages to be in Sandy Hook.”

During the event, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department will have a fire truck on hand.  The truck will serve as both a “touch-a-truck” for participants to enjoy, as well as a “stuff-a-truck.”   The Passport event is free, but participants are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to help stuff the truck. Items will be donated to the Faith Food Pantry.

On October 12, participants will be able to pick up their passport from any of the participating locations in Sandy Hook.  As they walk from place to place enjoying the treats, they will receive a stamp.  Completed passports will be entered in a drawing to receive a prize package worth over $1,500.

“This year, Sandy Hook village will be even more accessible for walkers,” said Rob Manna, owner of LRM, Inc.  “The streetscape project is well underway with new sidewalks, crosswalks, and street lights.  This will be the first chance for a big crowd to take advantage of these exciting new additions.”

For more information, please visit or “like” S.H.O.P. on Facebook by searching “Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity.”

KidsFit Fall Session 2013 Tue, 24 Sep 2013 21:06:17 +0000 365Danbury kidsfitKidsFit is a “mother’s morning out” program that I, and many of my friends have used for our children over the years. It is a fantastic way for your child to make friends and develop new skills all while you get a little time for yourself!

This pre-school readiness program is designed for children (without parent/caregiver) to experience the joy of learning, cooperative play, and social interaction with other children in hopes to prepare them for their first preschool experience. A typical class includes circle time, songs and parachute play, weather, group gym games, an arts & craft project, and a story. Appropriate transitions between activities allow children to recognize and become familiar with the structure of the day and to look forward to the next activity. Children must turn two by the start of the program and do not need to be potty trained. Please pack a snack and a drink for your child for each class.

Do you have a child at home ages 2-5?  If so, check out KidsFit!  October marks the start of the  fall sessions of Kidsfit in Brookfield and Newtown.

Connecticut’s Annual Sales Tax Free Week 2013 Sun, 18 Aug 2013 16:09:46 +0000 365Danbury Have you started your back to school shopping yet? Or maybe you need something new for yourself? Connecticut’s annual holiday from the sales tax begins on Sunday, August 18th and runs through Saturday, August 24th.
During this third week of August, individual items of clothing and footwear that cost less than $300 are completely exempt from state sales tax – other than sports equipment, specialty clothing, jewelry and accessories. Store sales, catalog and on-line purchases, purchases on layaway and rentals are exempt. In addition, the tax free holiday week includes items valued at more but discounted to under $300 with sales, coupons and similar merchant promotions.
Check those sales ads and get your coupons ready! You could score a real bargain this week! And as always, don’t forget to shop local when possible. For every $100 spent in a locally-owned business, $68 returns to the community. Spend the same amount at a national retailer and only $43 comes back. Spend it online and the local community receives $0 (Source:  Civic Economics 2008 Study).

S.H.O.P. Silent Auction and Wine Tasting Tue, 11 Jun 2013 20:38:20 +0000 365Danbury Sandy Hook Organization for PropserityThe Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (S.H.O.P.) in partnership with Sandy Hook Wine and Liquor and other local distributors is proud to present the second annual silent auction and wine tasting to benefit Newtown’s Faith Food Pantry and the Newtown Scholarship Fund.

The event will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Firehouse, 18 Riverside Road, Sandy Hook. A Portion of the proceeds will go to benefit S.H.O.P. to support their block parties and other events held in downtown Sandy Hook to support local businesses.

Attendees will taste local food from Sandy Hook restaurants including Figs, the newly opened Foundry Kitchen and Tavern, the Iron Bridge, Sandy Hook Deli, The Hook, The Villa Restaurant, and Village Perk, another new Sandy Hook establishment. Sandy Hook Wine & Liquor will provide a selection of wines and exotic beers. Guests will enjoy live entertainment by John Voket. Special guest, actress and singer Maggie Pangrazio will add beauty and vocal brawn to Voket’s music.

The event will feature artwork painted by local artist Jim Chillington. During the winter months following the tragedy of 12/14, Chillington felt compelled to paint local scenes of historic Newtown landmarks and iconic scenes of downtown Sandy Hook. Passersby may have seen him painting his oil in canvas works in front of Sabrina’s Style, the Pootatuck River or Edmond Town Hall.

In addition to artwork by Mr. Chillington, attendees may bid on items donated by local restaurants and businesses in Sandy Hook and beyond.

Chaired by local business owner Sharon Doherty and S.H.O.P. member Maribeth Hemingway, the events hopes to draw people out to enjoy good food, wine and music with good friends while benefitting a worthy cause.

Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased at any downtown Sandy Hook merchant or by calling Sharon Doherty at 203-948-1688.
